Description

From Jenne or Timbuktu, ancient centres of Islamic scholarship in Mali, this talismanic tunic is covered with protective phrases, “magic squares”, the names of Allah, and similar. An Iman would prepare the hand spun cotton strip weave ground by writing an appropriate Sura from the Koran on a wooden writing board, washing of the text into a bowl with other ingredients, then painting the liquid onto the cloth to give a hard starchy surface to write on when dry. The finished tunic would be worn in secret under a robe by someone requiring especially powerful protection. Dates from second half of twentieth century and is in excellent condition. Measurements: width 41 inches, length 34, 105 cm x 86.
