Description

If we look carefully at this quite heavyweight indigo and white hand spun cotton men’s wrapper cloth we can see that the weaver has added blocks of coloured stripes in the weft. Red, yellow, and green weft stripes across the strips are almost completely hidden by the predominance of the blue and white warp stripes. The subtle use of colour was a very old technique, both in Ghanaian kente cloths, and as here across the Ivory Coast border in the Bondoukou region. In a plaesing detail, the owner of the cloth has carefully embroidered a sun motif at the lower right corner. The cloth dates from circa 1920-1950 and is in excellent complete condition.
Measurements 10′ x 6′, 305 cm x 183.
