Description
Thick hand spun indigo dyed cotton cloth, woven in two wide panels, by a Yoruba woman using an upright loom. Until the 1960s almost every woman in some Yoruba villages and towns learned how to spin thread and weave these cloths that were both everyday dress and ceremonial attire. They were called kijiipa, aso ponpon (thick cloth) or just aso ofi (loom cloth.) This is a fine example dating from around 1910-1930 with quite varied warp stripes and hand stitched seams and hems. The photo doesn’t do justice to the beauty of the intense dark indigo. I’ll post a photo of similar cloths in use in a later post. In excellent condition. Measurements 76 1/2 inches 58,
