Description
Both the sparse use of weft float patterning and the red/blue pinstripe strips mark this Ewe kente woman’s cloth as a rare survivor from the C19th. The rich saffron yellow makes a beautiful contrast on alternate strips. I particularly like the way the weaver has echoed the blocks of weft stripes using a different, weft float, technique. There area small group of similar cloths in the British Museum collected during the C19th at the port town of Keta, (then called Quetta by the British). Some patches of colour loss in the yellow, otherwise very good neat condition and a great study piece.
