Lovely soft colours in this Lovely soft colours in this rare C19th Ewe kente woman’s cloth. White cotton strips have a central dark blue warp stripe and a sparse layout of threefold pattern blocks framing simple geometric extra weft float motifs. On the alternate strips dark blue, light blue, and yellow warp stripes are crossed by occasional blocks of red in the weft. We can see the different aesthetic visible in these early cloths in contrast to the more familiar, densely patterned, C20th cloths. Exceptionally for such an early textile from this region the cloth is complete without any patches or repairs and with only a few minor marks. Measurements 5’10” x 3’6″, 177cm x 106. .
