The blue striped background pattern of this Ewe chief’s kente robe cloth combines with largely muted colours in the weft blocks to produce a soft, harmonious and subtle overall design. The regular layout is built up from quite varied striped combinations in the weft and from numerous extra weft float motifs that include figurative designs such as birds and swords to pleasing effect. Dates from circa 1920-50. In excellent condition.
