Description
Yellow patterns enliven this large surviving piece of an ultra rare style of chief’s cloth from the Abron or Koulango people in north eastern Ivory Coast. A decade or so ago I found a small number of complete examples in this rare style where pattern blocks made up of long dynamic float motifs form distinct rows across the cloth. This is about 4/5ths of the original width and has a number of old repairs and patches but still displays the exuberant style, contrasting the mill spun coloured motifs with the hand spun indigo cotton ground. Dates from circa 1920-1950. Measurements 115 inches x 55, 293 cm x 140. .
