Description

Rare Yoruba aso oke woman’s shawl cloth woven around 1900, in the classic style that alternates plainer warp striped strips with strips of weft float motifs on a blue and white check ground. Cloths in this general style were woven from the nineteenth century through to the 1960s but with careful attention to details of style and materials examples can be dated with some confidence. This beautiful cloth has clear well woven motifs in magenta trade silk from the Saharan routes combined with imported green industrial cotton between  warp striped strips woven from both local and imported thread.  In very good condition, a number of joins in the warp striped strips.

Measurement: 67 ins x 39, 170 cm x 100.
