Description
Another very obscure and unusual Yoruba wedding cloth, a two panel women’s wrapper cloth from the Igbomina Yoruba town of Omu Aran, circa 1950s. Woven by a woman on the vertical single heddle loom, with simple supplementary weft float patterning at the lower edge. This is the part of the cloth that would be most visible in use, with the cloth wrapped around her body and bunched at the waist. Cloths from the Omu Aran area were one of very few types where red, or as here, yellow, industrial cotton was added to the traditional blue and white handspun indigo dyed cotton kijiipa cloths. In excellent condition.
Measures 72 inches x 55, 185 cm x 140.
