Description

Indigo strip weave men’s robs from the Kotokoli or neighboring people in northern Benin Republic. The strips of hand spun indigo dyed cotton are folded lengthways at the chest before flaring to a wide skirt. These were riding tunics although there were very few horses in the region – at least if you had the robe you were the kind of big man who might have a horse as well. These are slightly bigger and heavier than the patched tunics we normally find from Benin and are scarce in this good condition. Hand tailored throughout. Dates from circa 1930-1950.

Excellent condition, just washed and very wearable.

Measurements 64 inches wide X 51 length, 163 cm X 130.
