Description
Typically the imagery on this classic Asafo flag would depict a large crocodile among a school of fish and illustrate the saying “fish get fat for the benefit of the crocodile.” Here though, and uniquely to my knowledge, the crocodile has been replaced by a finely depicted and equally large turtle. We can attribute this superb museum quality flag on stylistic grounds to the Saltpond workshop, and most likely to it’s main master flagmaker Kweku Kakanu (1910-1982.) It dates to circa 1950s and is in excellent condition.
From a UK private collection assembled in the 1970s and 80s. Authentic old flags in acceptable condition are now near impossible to source in Ghana and prices have risen accordingly
