Pleasing colour combination and relatively austere design lift this fine and rare mid C20th Fante Asafo flag from Ghana. Although I have not seen this motif before it likely warns rivals not to underestimate the danger beneath the calm appearance of the company – the small figure (a child ?) has blood on his hand and face after touching the surface of the pond. The style of the main figure suggests it can be attributed to the master flagmaker Kweku Kakanu and his Saltpond workshop, probably in the 1950s. Some small patched repairs by our conservator. Measurements 60 inches x 40, 152 cm x 102.
