Description
I love the little guy with a palm frond in the lower corner of this cloth. A 1960s “toile de korhogo” made and collected in the village of Fahaka near Korhogo in north Ivory Coast. At around this time a small number of Senufo artists began to paint cloths with the iron rich mud paint, elaborating on motifs and techniques previously reserved for Poro society masquerade costumes. Early examples like this had a flair and vitality that gives them considerable charm, before over the following decades repetition and simplification for tourist cloths set in. Here we see eight fully costumed “Poro” society masqueraders in full costume, each with the classic fierce Senufo “firespitter” mask headpiece.
Collected in the 1960s, ex Swiss private collection. In excellent condition.
Measurements 146 cm x 80, 4’10” x 2’8″.
