Description

Distinctive and highly unusual chief’s wrapper cloth from the Anlo or Koulango people in north eastern Ivory Coast. The hand spun indigo dyed cotton ground is crossed by carefully aligned rows of weft stripes in orange, yellow, red, and white. At each end of the cloth a broad border section alternating stripes with weft float zigzags is edged on both sides by long tassels. Very few high end cloths from this Bondoukou region come on the market in the last 3 or 4 years. This is the only one I have seen with the double rows of tassels. In excellent condition, dates from circa 1950s.

Measures 103 inches X 59, 263 cm X 150.
