Description

Crocodiles, frogs, and elephants (at the lower edge of the detail) are represented schematically on this dramatic cloth from the Ijebu Yoruba who live across the lagoon north of Lagos. All were seen as avatars of important water spirits. The faded pistachio green cotton background is very unusual. These cloths were woven by women using the upright single heddle loom and as here typically made up of four wide panels. They were worn by Ijebu chiefs and by elders who belonged to a society known as Ogboni that had various responsibilities relating to the installation of the king and the maintenance of an important shrine dedicated to the Earth. Dates from the first half of the C20th and has been well used but is complete with no stains or holes.
Measurements 8′ 2″ x 5′ 9″, 250 cm x 174.
