Description
Elaborate Fulani wedding hanging cloth from Mali, that updates the traditional blue and white checkerboard patterning with colourful weft stripes and cotton versions of some motifs from the wool weaving tradition. The colours of the post-Independence Mali flag are reproduced in the weft stripes and, in a nice touch, on a smaller scale in some of the float motifs, and the quality of the weaving is high throughout. There is a small brown stain near the centre of the cloth, otherwise good neat condition throughout. Dates from circa 1960s.
Measurements 7’10” x 4’9″, 238 cm x 145.
