FR942 – Fine wedding hanging cloth from Niamey in Niger

1 in stock

Description

Fine example of the dramatic style of wedding hanging cloth from Niamey in Niger. Woven by a weaver of the Djerma/Zarma people and called “teratera”, these cloths had their own distinctive pattern repertoire adapted from older Fulani wool weaving motifs. On this piece the dense and complex central pattern block is set effectively within the more sparely patterned field. There are a few small holes at the edges where the cloth was fixed to the wall to serve as a backdrop for a family ceremony, otherwise it is in excellent complete condition.
Measurements 8’4″ x 4’2″, 253 cm x 126.
