Description
Different shades of soft blue hand spun cotton are set in a quite elaborate pattern as a weaver in the north west of Ivory Coast transformed the simple checkerboard patterning of Fulani cloths from Mali into a more complex interplay of rectangular blocks and lens shaped inserts. This rare piece dates from early in the twentieth century and is in excellent complete condition. It would have been a highly prized and prestigious sign of status owned by a high ranking man or woman.
