Description
Rows of scissors across the centre of this very rare pair of Ewe kente woman’s cloths. Why scissors ? Perhaps the wealthy lady who commissioned these cloths was a seamstress ? The cloths are profusely decorated with mainly figurative extra weft float motifs – hands, birds, lightening flashes. Very few Ewe women’s cloths were this extensively decorated, primarily I think, because such cloths were prohibitively expensive for women who had to feed and school their children and therefore had less resources available for prestige dressing than their male counterparts. A second reason that we rarely see a pair like this is that typically as they are handed down through a family the two cloths would go to different daughters. So altogether an exceptional find. We are selling both cloths together. They date from circa 1950s and are in excellent complete condition.
Measurements: Each cloth is 6’5″ x 4’1″, 196 cm x 125.
