Description
Oware, the Ghanaian name for the popular “mancala” game, was a metaphor for armed conflict and rivalry between Asafo companies. On this C19th or early C20th flag a man and a woman face each other over a stylised Oware game board. The patterned background cloth is an interesting example of the type of printed cotton cloth then made in Manchester, England with a design intended to appeal to customers in African colonies. The border is elaborate for such an early flag and includes a fringe of imported knitting wool.
In excellent condition. Flags from this period often lacked the elaborate borders found on later pieces.
From a UK private collection assembled in the 1970s and 80s. Authentic old flags in acceptable condition are now near impossible to source in Ghana and prices have risen accordingly
Measurements 5’3″ x 3’5″, 160 cm x 104
