Description
These simple and unassuming indigo cloths have a great dignity and beauty. They were once woven throughout much of the Yoruba speaking region of south western Nigeria, using locally grown and hand spun indigo dyed cotton. Made up of two wide panels joined at the centre, these cloths were woven by women on an upright single heddle loom producing a thick durable fabric that was called kijiipa. Dates from around 1930-1950. In excellent condition. These beautiful cloths were once typical dress for Yoruba ladies but over the second half of the C20th changing fashions and a drastic decline in the number of women who wove throughout south western Nigeria saw it rapidly disappear. Today these culturally significant and beautiful textiles are increasingly hard to find
