Description
In the small town of Ososo, set among rocky hills in the far north of Edo State, Nigeria, these striped cloths were worn by young women at a ceremony/ritual to mark the marriageable status of their age group. The red stripes echoed the red camwood paste that was smeared over their upper bodies. Woven by a woman weaver in two panels and combining mill spun red cotton thread with hand spun local white and indigo dyed cotton. More broadly they are one of only two local traditions of women’s weaving that added red stripes to the standard repertoire of blue and white. Dates from circa 1950 and is in excellent condition.
Measurements 5’4″ x 3’9″, 161 cm x 141.
