Description
Spectacular chief’s cloth from the Bondoukou region of eastern Ivory Coast. Pink, yellow, and cream blocks alternate between adjacent strips on the central field between exceptionally complex and elaborate borders. Three rows of weft blocks in pink, red, and yellow frame small and quite varied geometric weft float motifs while each edge of the border section has braided tassels. These cloths were worn by chiefs and kings among the Abron, Anlo and other small Akan kingdoms in eastern Ivory Coast, alongside Ewe and Asante cloths traded from Ghana.
Dates from circa 1920-40s. Missing some strips used to make neat patched repairs but still an important document of a rare style as well as a beautiful textile.
Measurements 9’2″ x 4’9″, 280 cm x 145 plus fringes.
