Description
Exceptional early C20th chief’s cloth from the Bondoukou region of north eastern Ivory Coast. The solid rich blue indigo ground creates a brick like pattern in combination with the narrow white edges and the blocks of yellow and red. Hand spun indigo and white cotton, imported mill spun cotton red and yellow. Along with more familiar kente cloths traded from neighbouring Ghana, cloths such as this were worn by kings and chiefs among the numerous small Akan kingdoms along the border region. Dates from circa 1900-1930 and is in excellent complete condition.
