Description

Young woman’s festival wrapper cloth from the Wodaabe nomads of Niger. A broad border of fine hand embroidered patterning on a cloth composed of ultra narrow one cm width strips of lightweight indigo dyed cotton cloth carefully stitched together by hand. These very narrow strips were the most expensive and prestigious of the cloths woven for the Wodaabe and Tuareg of the Sahara and Sahel by Hausa weavers around Kano in Nigeria. Imported black cloth or wider strips of woven cloth have largely replaced them over recent decades. Two wider coloured strips break up the blue black ground. Dates from circa 1970 and is in excellent complete condition.

Measurements 4′ x 3’8″, 120 cm x 111.
