Description
Careful examination reveals several recent repairs in the sleeves especially of this wild silk Yoruba agbada robe. Nevertheless it is in overall good condition and would be a great costume item. Natural beige wild silk sanyan, hand spun from the cocoons of certain moths, was one of the three most prestigious and culturally significant textiles in Yoruba tradition. The robe is tailored from asooke strips of sanyan, each with a central warp stripe of hand spun cotton. The lining at the neck and chest is a beautiful pale blue trade cloth cotton. Dates from circa 1920-40.
Measurements: width 8’5″, length 3’11”, 256 cm x 118.
