Description

Two superbly realised figures confront each other on this spectacular flag from circa 1930-1950 which was arguably the golden age of Asafo flag production. The black machine at the right, which on first glance looks like a trap, is actually a cocoa weighing scale of a type widely in use in the Gold Coast in the first half of the C20th. The rounded fleshy calves and the prominently curved back of the heads distinguish the work of this unknown artist at the Saltpond workshop from the well known master flagmaker Kweku Kakanu. It might perhaps be by his teacher Kweku Essel Manso (died c.1940.)

In excellent condition. Flags from this period often lacked the elaborate borders found on later pieces.
From a UK private collection assembled in the 1970s and 80s. Authentic old flags in acceptable condition are now near impossible to source in Ghana and prices have risen accordingly

Measurements 5’5″ x 3’3″, 165 cm x 98
