Description

K299 – Asante kente men’s cotton cloth with a regular alternation in the weft between blocks of indigo dyed cotton and blocks of white, while a white warp throughout (except for a narrow indigo stripe at one selvedge) mutes the blue colour. The indigo blocks are crossed by two groups of three weft stripes, while a single stripe group runs across the centre of each white block. These  narrow indigo stripes are  woven using a rarely seen technique that does not draw the pick of the weft fully tight before beating it in, resulting in  textured effect. Overall this is a very subtle and carefully assembled piece that results in a beautiful cloth. Dates from circa 1900-30. Condition is very good, few neat repairs.

Measurement: 123 inches x 73, 312 cm x 185 cm.
