Description

A rare style of marriage cloth from a small village group called Oke Onigbin (“hill of snails”) in Kwara State, Nigeria. Traditionally women among this Igbomina Yoruba group were prolific weavers and ideally this cloth would be woven by the mother of the bride in past times. The cloth was called “elejo”, “with a snake” in Yoruba, and the weft float patterning echoes the pattern on the back of a python. Pythons were considered sacred in this village group. The cloth is woven in two panels joined by hand stitching down the centre with thick local cotton thread. It is slightly darker than in the photos and in excellent condition. Dates from around 1930-1950s. Measurements 6’7″ x 4’8″, 200 cm x 131.
