Description
Not an Ewe cloth, this rare and beautiful woman’s wrapper from northern Ghana that blends hand spun dark indigo cotton with magenta silk from the trans-Saharan caravan trade. The majority of the silk thread from this centuries old trade was destined for markets in Nigeria where alaari silk was highly prized, but a small fraction found its way to Salaga and other entrepot in the north of Ghana. Dating from around 1900 the cloth alternates three different striped and checked strip patterns. It retains its original very neat hand stitched seams and hems throughout and is in excellent condition.
Measurements 5’5″ x 3’9″, 166 cm x 115.
