Description

Elaborate red and white borders built up from multiple stripes and varied geometric float motifs frame a central field of indigo and white on this remarkable chief’s robe cloth from the Bondoukou region of eastern Ivory Coast. Twenty two strips remain from what was likely a 24 or even 26 strip width originally, and it was clearly a much loved cloth worn over several generations. There is a single patch in another indigo strip near the centre, otherwise what remains is soft and worn but without holes or stains.

Measurements 11’10 plus fringe x 4’9″, 361 cm plus fringe x 144 cm. Price reflects the worn condition.
