Description

Spectacular Malian wedding hanging cloth, a “couverture personnages” depicting two women with two soldiers. Aligning each piece of the strip woven cloth to create these figurative hangings was a tour de force of weaving skill that only a handful of weavers in the second half of the C20th mastered. This example is woven with wool wefts on a cotton warp and can be attributed on stylistic grounds to a weaver called Jaara Ila Jigannde, who wove thinner, more elongated figures than the better known Oumar Bocoum. There is another example of his work in the British Museum (Af 2005,08.1 in the online database of the collection.) These cloths were prestige display items hung up at a wedding in a wealthy Fulani family. In my view they are among the most important and interesting innovations in Malian weaving post-Independence. They are quite rare and we usually only get one or two examples per year. Dates from circa 1980 and is in excellent condition.

Measurements 7’8″ x 5′, 233cm x 151
