Description

Superb “couverture personnages” wedding hanging cloth by the Fulani “mabuube” weaver Oumar Bocoum, the best known of the small number of weavers capable of creating these remarkable textiles. An example of his work was exhibited at the Kennedy Centre in Washington and the Barbican Art Gallery in London in 1995., and is now represented in several major US museum collections.
Careful planning and precise use of the tapestry weave technique on narrow strip cloth was needed to align the design across adjacent strips. These cloths were hung up as a backdrop to a wedding in wealthy Fulani families in Segou and nearby towns during the second half of the C20th. There is some light water marking on the white areas consistent with use, overall very good condition. Dates from circa 1980.

Measurements 262 cm x 150, 8’7″ x 4’11”.
