Description

Two panel woman’s weave shawl cloth from a weaver of the Ebira people in the town of Okene in central Nigeria. Cloths with this style of patterning were primarily woven for sale further south to the peoples of the Niger Delta, where they were known as “ikakibite”, “tortoise cloth” and were a vital element of costume for various masquerade performances, puberty ceremonies etcetera. The design originated at least several centuries ago, with Yoruba weavers in Ijebu-Ode near Lagos, spread to Akwete Igbo weavers and later to this type of Okene cloth. The addition of metallic lurex thread in the weft float patterning allows us to date this example to the 1970s. It’s in very good complete condition with a few faint marks.
Measurements 5’6 + fringes” x 3’9″, 166 cm +fringes x 114.
