Description
On this superb Ewe chief’s cloth the weaver has filled every available space, weaving narrow stripes between each pair of weft colour blocks. The blocks themselves are mostly composed of multiple narrow stripes across the strips. Variation and visual variety is achieved by replacing some of the weft stripes with geometric and neatly woven figurative motifs scattered throughout the field of the cloth. Note the details achieved on these motifs, such as use of three colours on the bird in the final detail here (swipe to view.) Only the wealthiest of Ewe patrons, typically senior chiefs and wealthy traders, could afford to commission a cloth of this complexity and typically they would seek out a master weaver with an established local reputation. This kente masterpiece dates from circa 1930-1950 and is in excellent condition.
