Description
Pairs of tiny elephants walk across this quite unusual Yoruba asooke woman’s wrapper cloth. Animal motifs were rare on asooke but when used elephants, as a sign of power and status, were the most frequent choice. The subtle, understated palette of this cloth is also unusual. Dates from around the 1920s and retains all its original hand stitched seams and hems.
Measurements 5’10” x 4’2, 178 cm x 127.
