Description

A dramatic leopard attacks two men on this superb early C20th Asafo flag. A similar flag by the same hand is published in Adler & Barnard, (1992, figure 147″ with the saying “If you shoot at a leopard and do not kill it, it is better not to have shot at all.” Despite his distinctive style this artist has not been positively identified, although Forni & Ross (2017 figure 3.65) give the name Kojo Akwa for a flag that might be by the same hand. In any event this is an exceptional example in an important style, dating to around 1900-1920. In excellent condition.
From a UK private collection assembled in the 1970s and 80s. Authentic old flags in acceptable condition are now near impossible to source in Ghana and prices have risen accordingly

Measurements 5’1″ x 2’8″, 155 cm x 81
