Description

AGB140 – Kanem women’s festival tunic.  This dramatic and rarely collected garment was known as a sharwan kura and was the most elaborate and important of a number of embroidered tunics worn by women in wealthy families among the Kanem and Borgu people of the Maiduguri region in north eastern Nigeria. Hand embroidered with floss silk on a trade cloth background, this example was also tailored by hand. Condition is excellent. Dates from first half of C20th.
