Description
Another heirloom Yoruba woman’s weave cloth. Narrow stripes of wine red silk “alaari” brought across the Sahara to northern Nigeria, lift the indigo and white check pattern into a high end luxury cloth. Notice the asymmetric layout typical of Yoruba woman’s weaving and also the pattern of white stripes across the two panels of cloth – three single stripes alternate with three sets of three. Some tiny losses of the silk as shown in the detail, otherwise very good neat condition. Retains its original hand stitched seams and hems throughout. Dates from circa 1900.
Measurements 6’3″ x 4’6″, 191cm x 137.
