Description

Three different very narrow strip weave indigo patterns are alternated on this woman’s wrapper cloth woven by Hausa male weaver in northern Nigeria – two striped 2 cm width strips and one plain blue 3 cm width. This was a classic Hausa textile design that was once widely available and worn by Fulani, Hausa, Djerma and other groups in north Nigeria and Niger. Please see my next post for a similar cloth in use. However as an everyday cloth for rural people very few were retained or collected and consequently we don’t often see them. This piece, which retains a tie strap at the op edge, was collected when new in around 1970. In excellent condition.

Measurements 5’10” x 4’2″, 178 cm x 126.
