FR933 – Rare cotton version of the classic Fulani wool kaasa cloth tradition

1 in stock

Description

Rare cotton version of the classic Fulani wool kaasa cloth tradition. The white background is hand spun cotton rather than the traditional pale cream coloured local wool, while the float motifs and brown bands remain natural dyed wool. A few Fulani weavers began to weave these cotton versions during the colonial period in response to demand from French customers who found the low quality sheep wool too scratchy. (contrary to what generations of market vendors across West Africa have told buyers these cloths were never woven from camel hair. ) Very few of these attractive cotton ground versions turn up. In excellent complete condition. Dates from mid C20th.
Measurements 7’8″ x 4 ‘1″, 234 cm x 124.
