Description
An important early Asafo flag from the No 4 Company, “Wombir” in Elmina with a striped ground based on the red, white, and blue of the Netherlands flag. This company was established by the workers bought to the town in the 1660s by the Dutch to construct Fort St.Jago, built as a rival to the large and better known Elmina fort built by the Portuguese. As a result of this history the No.4 Company considered themselves Dutch allies until the Dutch handed over their possessions in the region to the British in 1872. This published flag (Adler & Barnard 1992 figure 70) depicts the St.Jago fort, then controlled by the British and flying the Union flag, guarded by soldiers and with a prominent depiction of a telegraph line. Telegraph arrived in the Gold Coast in 1881 and was among the wonders of European technology to make a big impact.
Some faint marks , otherwise in good strong condition. Flags from this period often lacked the elaborate borders found on later pieces.
From a UK private collection assembled in the 1970s and 80s. Authentic old flags in acceptable condition are now near impossible to source in Ghana and prices have risen accordingly
Measurements 5′ x 3’9″, 153 cm x 114
