Description

When I am looking for old aso oke in the markets in Nigeria (too long ago now sadly) I always try the patience of the traders by carefully checking the back and looking at all the seams. What I am trying to find is elusive cloths like this one where all the original hand sewn seams and hems are attached. Machine sewing, frequently done when the original becomes loose over the years, loses a few millimetres at each edge of the strip and to my mind, disrupts the subtle harmony of the design. An indigo hand spun cotton Yoruba aso oke woman’s wrapper cloth from around 1900, with then expensive imported cotton used for the white and red stripes. In excellent complete condition.
