Description
Superb Ewe kente chief’s cloth that reinterprets the classic Asante kente pattern called “akyempim” or “a thousand shields” in multiple bright coloured blocks on a dark blue cotton ground. Asante shields were basketry rectangles, here represented by the interlacing diamonds of the coloured blocks. Notice that the weaver has used two slightly different shades of the dark blue in the background. Dates from circa 1950 and is in excellent complete condition.
Measurements 10’3″ x 6’1″, 312 cm x 184.
