Description
Like Oware, checkers was a popular metaphor for armed conflict and rivalry between Asafo companies and so an obvious choice for flag imagery. On this superb example, likely by the well known master flagmaker Kweku Kakanu and his Saltpond workshop, two large seated chiefs face off over a checkers board. There are a few minor marks of use and wear but overall condition is very good.
Flags from this period often lacked the elaborate borders found on later pieces.
From a UK private collection assembled in the 1970s and 80s. Authentic old flags in acceptable condition are now near impossible to source in Ghana and prices have risen accordingly
