Superb museum quality Ewe kente chief’s cloth in a very rare weft faced style. Squares of colour in red, yellow, green, dark blue, and white alternate along the strips forming both an overall pattern and drawing the eye to repeating blocks throughout. This cotton cloth, although fairly thick, has a soft relaxed texture and is in excellent complete condition, with the original hand stitched seams throughout. This wonderful cloth dates from circa 1930-1950. In the context of West Africa strip weaving a weft-faced cloth has stripes across the strips, while a wrap faced cloth has stripes along the strips, and many kente cloths alternate weft and warp faced sections throughout.
