Description

Another incredibly intricate and time consuming piece to create, this one is a Yoruba “adire alabere”, meaning “tie and dye with a needle.” Fine raffia thread was used to stitch squares that divided up the ground, then to fill each square with a diagonal grid, finally the end sections are tied using tiny seeds. This was weeks of work. After the cloth was dies as much as possible of the raphia stitching was carefully cut and unpicked, itself another massive amount of painstaking work. More loose fragments of raphia came out during use and washing. This technique left a fascinating textured effect on the finished cloth. Dates from circa 1960 and is in excellent condition.

Measurements 6’3″ x 5’5″, 190 cm x 165.
