Description

E948 – This cotton Ewe woman’s kente cloth is an unusual variant pattern where a tapestry weave technique is used to create a pattern in the weft – this involves passing a weft thread part way across the cloth strip and returning it to the same side, completing the row with a second weft in a different colour. This allows the weaver to create the triangular patterns that predominate on this cloth, while the balanced weave structure between warp and weft allows the black cotton warp to mute the impact of the colours in the weft to a subtle overall effect. On a good example such as this there are occasional breaks and shifts in the regularity of the pattern. The Ewe name for this pattern was “Danhume.” Some patched repairs, otherwise good condition. Dates from around the 1950s.

Measurements: 79 ins x 44, 201 cm x 112.
