Description
FR818 – This neat little cloth is a suban, a wedding cloth from a weaver of the Djerma/Zarma people of Niger, dating from around the 1950s or 1960s. It’s small size suggests it was likely made for a girl, or perhaps for a woman’s shawl. It shows the characteristic offbeat array of red and black extra weft float patterning that is essentially cotton versions of some motifs inherited from Fulani maabo wool weaving. Subsequently these lightweight suban cloths seem to have been largely displaced by the larger and thicker style called teratera, that are much more common. In very good condition.
Measurements 59 inches X 37, 150 cm X 96.
