Dramatic blue striped Yoruba women’s wrapper cloth woven from hand spun indigo dyed cotton. Made up of two wide panels joined at the centre, these cloths were woven by women on an upright single heddle loom producing a thick durable fabric called kijiipa. For many centuries up to about the 1960s in rural areas similar cloths were the mainstay of Yoruba women’s dress. This is a particularly fine example with a simple but effective pattern. It dates from around the 1950s and is in excellent condition.
